S Mark

The S Mark, exclusively provided by Intertek, is a symbol of electrical safety and evidence to your clients that Intertek has independently tested and certified your product’s compliance to applicable European safety requirements.

Consumers and retailers want to feel confident that the products they purchase are safe. As brands become more interchangeable, and since CE marking is self-declared and does not require independent testing, marks from impartial testing companies, such as the S Mark, become increasingly important since they convey the safety customers are looking for.

Safety begins with an S in Europe

Bearing the S Mark, your product may be sold throughout the EU without further safety testing or certification. As a European safety mark, the S Mark communicates to over 450 million people that your products are safe. Almost everywhere in Europe, safety begins with an ‘S’ – Sicherheit (German); Seguridad (Spanish); Sécurité (French); Sicurezza (Italian); Segurança (Portuguese) and Säkerhet (Swedish).

The S Mark is available in two versions: with and without the customer-friendly tagline For your own safety. We will provide you with a version of the S Mark in the language of the market where the product will be sold.

• Independent testing and certification minimises manufacturers' risk of product liability issues through third party testing and follow up. You safeguard your brand’s reputation by making sure it will not be put at risk by a product safety failure, and reduce the risk of your product being taken off the market because of a failure to meet legal requirements.
• Certification is a powerful marketing tool that adds value to the brand, e.g. they are safe or environmentally friendly, which instils a strong sense of confidence among customers. The certification can be used in product catalogues and adverts etc.
• If an independently certified product is disputed in court (e.g. regarding product liability legislation) the issuing certification body may assist the manufacturer by providing evidence that the product was tested before it was marketed.
