TCO Development Certification

Intertek is one of only a few organisations accepted by TCO Development to conduct testing and certification to all current Environmental Labelling Schemes, including TCO ’03, ’99, ’95, ’92, and MPR II and III applications.

We can also perform testing on Lap Tops, System Units and Key Boards for applicable TCO specifications for TCO certification.

With more than a decade of experience and working relationships with TCO Development, Intertek ETL SEMKO streamlines your route to TCO certification by managing the required testing and the handing of your certification. We offer you:

  • Short delivery times – in most cases Intertek ETL SEMKO can provide test reporting and verifications within one week of receiving samples.
  • All the support that might be needed for each application.
  • Help with the total process involved with TCO Certification.

Certification requirements

The Swedish Confederation of Professional Employees, TCO, over the last 15 years has, with the assistance of Intertek ETL SEMKO's Special Measurements Group, developed a series of end user and environmental requirements for IT equipment. Certification to these requirements provides manufacturers with a means of demonstrating superior product quality and attention to ergonomics.

The primary requirements of TCO certification concern the safety and health of employees and the environment, including:

  • Visual ergonomics and image quality for displays.
  • Ergonomics of keyboards, printers, mobile phones and furniture.
  • Magnetic and electrical field emission levels.
  • Environmental management system for manufacturers, ISO 14001.
  • Use of hazardous compounds such as brominated flame retardants or mercury and cadmium.
  • Energy consumption and rapid restart after power down.
  • Noise levels and chemical emissions.

MPR II or MPR III compliance

In the case of only complying with MPR II, Intertek’s mark with the text “SEMKO MPR1990:8 VERIFIED” can be applied to the product. Although MPR II was released in 1991, it is still an attractive verification in some markets – for example, MPR II is an official hygiene requirement in Russia that is coupled with ISO9241-3 compliance.

MPR III was released in mid 90s and category A of MPRIII (pr EN 50279) is similar to the TCO´99 emission requirements.
